Most of us are impatient and when it comes down to it and we'd prefer to follow a fast weight loss diet. The 'now' culture is as prevalent in dieting as it is in all other walks of life. When it comes to losing weight we want to get rid of as much as possible as fast as possible. But is this a good thing?
The interpretation of what constitutes 'fast' is different depending on the individual. For instance, one person might think that losing 25 lbs in 6 weeks is fast and another person may think 10 lbs over the same period is fast. However a person looks at it, if you're hoping to achieve fast weight loss you've got to do it in a healthy way.

It's important to be aware that health complications can arise if a dieter isn't careful and they are on a fast weight loss diet. This is because losing weight too rapidly can put the body under a degree of strain. All too often a fast weight loss diet will basically be a crash diet; this is not the case for all rapid diets but certainly many. It's unfortunate but often true that once the dieter ends a crash diet they can quickly regain the weight they lost, thereby perpetuating the need to diet.
There are other reasons why losing weight too quickly can be bad for you. When a dieter is losing weight at a very rapid pace they should really be asking themselves what have they been losing because it is unlikely to all be body fat. This is because the liver can only metabolise around 2 lbs of body fat per week. Therefore anything over this amount is likely to be fluids which can very easily be put back on once the dietary restrictions end.
Another reason that a crash diet is potentially a long-term health problem is that it tricks the body into a crisis mode. Such sudden changes in the amount of calories fed into the body will make it believe that there is a real food shortage and that it must prepare for starvation. When it does this it starts to break down muscle cells as well as fat ones. This is not good for two reasons. Firstly, once you complete your diet it will be far harder to get those muscles back than it will the fat and secondly, by losing those muscle cells you've lost a valuable weapon in your arsenal against weight because just to exist a muscle cell uses more energy than a fat cell. This is another great reason to make sure you stay fit and strong, you'll be able to see increasing weight loss benefits the more muscles you have. But this doesn't mean you have to become a bodybuilder!
You can't get away from the fact that any sort of attempt at a fast weight loss diet must be done correctly and with adequate knowledge of the risks. A great way to do this is through a good weight loss program where others have already done the hard work and research for you, all you have to do is follow their advice.
